In der Ausstellung „In den Strudeln der Zeit“ spiegeln Kunstwerke aus der Sammlung von Gerhard Schneider die vielfältigen Herausforderungen, Veränderungen und Wendepunkte wider, die Deutschland im Laufe des letzten Jahrhunderts erlebt hat: Vom Ersten Weltkrieg in die Wirren der Revolutionszeit, über die Weimarer Republik und die NS-Zeit bis zur Teilung und Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands. Die Kunstwerke oszillieren zwischen persönlicher Betroffenheit und bewusstem Dokumentieren für die Nachwelt.
Zeitlich umfasst die Ausstellung das von Historikern (zumindest für Europa) gelegentlich als das „kurze Jahrhundert“ apostrophierte Zeitalter; zugleich gilt es als das schrecklichste und blutigste der Menschheitsgeschichte mit weltweit mindestens 75 Millionen Toten in den beiden Weltkriegen. Deutschland sah in dieser Zeit eine Revolution, zwei Diktaturen, eine fast 45jährige Teilung und schließlich eine geschichtlich bis heute einmalig zu nennende friedliche Wiedervereinigung. Die ausgestellten Gemälde und Grafiken beginnen im Expressionismus der Kriegszeit und decken über das 20. Jahrhundert hinweg verschiedene stilistische Entwicklungen ab.
Die Sammlung Gerhard Schneider suchte von Beginn an nach Erst-Entdeckung und vereint bis heute vielfach übersehene Leistungen ungewürdigter Künstler:innen. Diese Nichtbeachtung geht zurück auf Verwerfungen, für die speziell die Nazi-Diktatur verantwortlich ist. Sie sah zum einen in dem Aufbruch in die Moderne eine „Entartung“, die die imaginierte deutsche Volksgemeinschaft verderbe, zum andern verfolgte sie all jene, die sich Neuerungen im Kunstverständnis verpflichtet fühlten. Die Künstler:innen gingen entweder ins Exil, in die „Innere Emigration“ oder kamen aufgrund rassistischer oder politischer Verfolgung ums Leben.
Auch in der Zeit nach 1945 bis zur Wiedervereinigung boten die Gesellschaften in der Bundesrepublik und in der DDR hinreichend Anlass, sich künstlerisch mit den gesellschaftlichen Strukturen, Erwartungen und Entwicklungen auseinanderzusetzen.
Die Ausstellung findet anlässlich des 85. Geburtstags von Dr. Gerhard Schneider statt, der sie weitgehend eigenständig kuratiert hat. Sie wird bis bis zum 11. Februar 2024 im Zentrum für verfolgte Künste zu sehen sein.
Die Eröffnung findet am 12. November 2023 um 11.30 Uhr im Meistermannsaal des Zentrums für verfolgte Künste statt.
