1935 brüstete sich das NS-Regime, ein 1000-jähriges Reich zu sein. Heinrich Mann konterte in seinem Vorwort zu Karl Schwesigs geplantem Buch „Schlegelkeller“ aus dem Exil in Südfrankreich wortgewaltig: „Die Ewigkeit, die das Hitlerreich sich beimisst, ist nicht dieselbe, die es verdient. Es verdient ein Museum zur Aufbewahrung seiner Greuel, damit nicht vergessen wird, wie tief, wenn das Unglück es will, die menschliche Natur sich erniedrigen lässt. Die Zeichnungen und Gemälde von Karl Schwesig sind würdig, das Museum zu zieren. Sie sollen die Beschauer lehren, vor Scham zu weinen.“
Im Museum Zentrum für verfolgte Künste hat dieser Entwurf des geplanten Buchs nun mit Werken aus allen Schaffensphasen Schwesigs eine Heimat gefunden. Gemälde aus den „Goldenen Zwanzigern“, Zeichnungen aus der Zeit der Inhaftierung, Druckgrafik und großformatige Ölbilder, die nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs bis zu seinem Tod 1955 in Düsseldorf entstanden sind.
Die Kulturstiftung der Länder ermöglichte der Bürgerstiftung für verfolgte Künste den Erwerb des Nachlasses von Karl Schwesig mit über 500 Werken für das Museum Zentrum für verfolgte Künste. Dazu Prof. Dr. Markus Hilgert, Generalsekretär der Kulturstiftung der Länder: „Das Nachlasskonvolut von Karl Schwesig ist nicht nur von großer regional- und kunsthistorischer Bedeutung. Karl Schwesig hat gegen den Nationalsozialismus Widerstand geleistet und dafür einen hohen Preis bezahlt. Seine künstlerischen und seine schriftlichen Zeugnisse stärken im Zentrum für verfolgte Künste den Sammlungsbestand und werden hier künftig der Öffentlichkeit und der Forschung zur Verfügung stehen. So wird Karl Schwesig künftig den ihm gebührenden Platz in der Kunstgeschichte einnehmen, dessen Lebensweg Mahnung ist für die Freiheit der Kunst und den Einsatz für Demokratie und die Würde des Menschen.“
Die Präsentation des Nachlasskonvoluts von Karl Schwesig fand am 1. Februar 2024 im Museum Zentrum für verfolgte Künste in Anwesenheit von Prof. Dr. Markus Hilgert statt. Das Team des Hauses mit Museumsdirektor Dr. Jürgen Kaumkötter freute sich außerdem, die Tochter von Karl Schwesig als Ehrengast der Veranstaltung begrüßen zu dürfen. Antje Schwesig richtete bewegende Worte an die Gäste und erinnerte daran, dass Ihr Vater nicht nur Künstler war, sondern ein politischer Mensch, der für seine Überzeugung einstand. Sie freute sich, dass sein Nachlass nun in guten Händen und der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich ist.
Neben der Vorstellung der überarbeiteten Dauerausstellung mit Kunstwerken von Karl Schwesig durch das Team des Museums präsentierten die 9. Klassen des Solinger Humboldtgymnasiums ihr Projekt „Der Pfad. Begegnungen mit verfolgten Künstler:innen“.
Karl Schwesig, geboren am 19. Juni 1898 in Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck, war Mitglied der Künstlervereinigung Das Junge Rheinland und Verfolgter in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus. Schwesig besuchte in Düsseldorf die Kunstgewerbeschule und studierte an der Kunstakademie bei Heinrich Campendonk und Adolf Uzarski. Nach seinem Studium arbeitete er als freischaffender Künstler in Düsseldorf und gehörte zum Künstlerkreis der Mutter Ey. Schwesig hat sich vor allem mit dem Thema der Stadtlandschaft und der Gesellschaft beschäftigte. Seine Bilder sind von einer starken Farbigkeit und einer expressiven Formensprache geprägt. In der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus wurde Schwesigs Kunst als „entartet“ diffamiert und aus deutschen Museen entfernt.
Karl Schwesig wurde 1933 von der SA verhaftet, als er Flugblätter gegen die Lügen der Nationalsozialisten über den Reichstagsbrand verteilte. Im berüchtigten Schlegelkeller in Düsseldorf wurde er verhört und gefoltert. Nach seiner Flucht schuf er 1935/36 in Belgien eine Bildergeschichte mit 48 Tuschezeichnungen über die Grausamkeiten der SA, die leider nach einer Ausstellung in Moskau als verschollen gilt. 1983 konnte der Zyklus aufgrund von aufgefundenen Fotos der Zeichnungen reproduziert werden. Die expressiven Bilder sind für uns heute Dokumentation und Anklage.
Die Kulturstiftung der Länder fördert den Ankauf mit 128.800 Euro.
Der schriftliche Nachlass von Karl Schwesig liegt im Deutschen Exilarchiv 1933-1945 der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek.
