Nach der viel beachteten Aufführung von Erwin Schulhoffs Jazz-Oratorium „H. M. S. Royal Oak“ im Rahmen des Projekts „Musica non Grata“ im Dezember 2022 brachte das Ensemble EchoSpore der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Köln unter Leitung von Florence Millet am 3. Dezember 2023 Musiker:innen des Royal College of Music in London und des Ensemble Émigré unter der Leitung von Prof. Norbert Meyn mit ins Zentrum für verfolgte Künste, um Komponist:innen vorzustellen, die aus Deutschland vor der nationalsozialistischen Verfolgung flohen und eine neue Heimat in England fanden.
Den Auftakt machten Sarah Yang (Violine) und Yu-Chin Ho (Klavier) mit Stücken von Maria Herz (1878–1950). Die gebürtige Kölnerin gehörte zu den wenigen Frauen, die in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts als Komponistin Karriere machten. Als Jüdin nach der Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten in die Flucht getrieben, konnte sie im Exil nicht mehr an ihre Erfolge anknüpfen. Zwei Banner informierten über das Leben der deutschen Musikerin, die die mobile Ausstellung „Music, Migration and Mobility“ aus London ergänzten. Das mehrjährige Forschungsprojekt des Royal College of Music fokussierte auf den Beitrag der Migrant:innen zur Musikgeschichte in Groß-Britannien. Die Konzertpause nutzten viele Besucher:innen für einen Blick auf Themen wie Journeys, Opera und Education, aber auch Humour und Comics.
Simon Brown (Tenor) und Archie Bonham (Klavier) stellten Werke der Komponisten Fritz Berend, Mátyás Seiber, Joseph Horovitz und Hans Gál vor. Letzterer verarbeitete in seinen Kompositionen den Aufenthalt im Internierungslager auf der Isle of Wight, den auch jüdische Flüchtlinge als Deutsche erdulden mussten. Mit humorvollem Blick versetzte er sich in die Gedanken einer Möwe, die sich keinen Reim auf den Stacheldraht machen konnte, der auf einmal auf der Insel wucherte.
Norbert Meyn (Tenor) und Christopher Gould (Klavier) widmeten sich ebenfalls den Liedern von Berend und Horovitz, aber auch Robert Kahn und dem 2004 verstorbenen Peter Gellhorn, den Norbert Meyn noch persönlich kennenlernte und über den er im Rahmen seiner Forschung einen Dokumentarfilm produzierte.
Michael Foyle (Violine) und Florence Millet (Klavier) begeisterten mit der Suite in G Minor Op. 38 für Violine und Klavier von Adolf Busch und der Sonate für Violine und Klavier No 2 in A Moll von Robert Kahn.
Das letzte Wort des Abends hatte Albert Herz, Enkel der Komponistin Maria Herz, der extra aus Zürich angereist war. Sein Wunsch war, dass die Werke der Musiker:innen, deren Karrieren durch die Verfolgung in der NS-Zeit einen Bruch erfuhren, wieder in die Mitte des aktuellen Musikgeschehens gerückt werden und die Aufmerksamkeit bekommen, die der künstlerischen Qualität gebühren würde.
